Is it right for you?

Who these options are designed for

You may be a candidate if you
✓Have mild to moderate osteoarthritis, or tendon or ligament pain near a joint
✓Want to explore options before considering surgery
✓Have had limited relief from rest, physio, or steroid or hyaluronic acid injections
✓Prefer a treatment prepared from your own blood
!
When another path may fit better

Severe arthritis or a complete tendon rupture usually needs a different approach. We'll tell you if that's the case.

i
Before your appointment

An X-ray or MRI is needed before any injection. Our pre-screening also explains which anti-inflammatory medications and supplements to pause, and asks you to hydrate well on the day.

✓
After treatment

Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is common. Most people return to light activity within a day or two.

What the research says

Studied, with results that vary

Autologous protein solution has been studied for early to moderate knee osteoarthritis, showing symptom improvement with a favourable safety profile in published research. PRP is widely used for tendon and joint conditions.

Response depends on the joint, how advanced the arthritis is, and your activity level. No injection reverses arthritis, and we can't promise a specific result.

“Absolutely recommend Tia and PRP injections. I had persistent tennis elbow and arm pain for years. I tried so many therapies, including physio, acupuncture, massage, etc. Pain never totally improved. Finally Filipe suggested I try PRP and I was skeptical but was ready to try anything.Immediately felt better and after a few weeks I have minimal pain in that area. Already planning another PRP procedure.”

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the injection painful?

Most patients tolerate it well. A local anesthetic may be used, and ultrasound guidance supports comfort and precision. Some soreness for 24–48 hours afterwards is normal and temporary.

How many injections will I need?

nSTRIDE® APS is designed as a single injection, with re-evaluation if symptoms return, often around the 12-month mark. Many PRP patients have one injection; some conditions benefit from a 2-injection protocol, which your provider will recommend after assessment.

When can I return to normal activity?

Most people resume light activity within 24–48 hours. You'll get a personalized rehab timeline based on your joint and goals.

Do I need a referral or imaging first?

No referral is needed. Self-referrals are welcome. Imaging is required before treatment, so please bring a recent X-ray or MRI report to your consultation.

Is this covered by OHIP or insurance?

No, these injections aren't covered by OHIP. Some extended health plans reimburse part of the cost and most Health Spending Accounts accept it. We provide receipts for submission.

Understanding iron deficiency

Low ferritin, iron deficiency and anemia are related, but not the same

Iron is stored in the body and used to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. When stores run low over time, our body is affected in stages.

Stage 1

Low iron stores

The body's iron reserves are running down. Red blood cell production is usually still normal at this point.

Ferritin
Often low
Hemoglobin
Usually normal
→
Stage 2

Iron deficiency

Stores are depleted and less iron is available to the body's tissues, even though hemoglobin may still be in range.

Ferritin, TSAT
May be low
Hemoglobin
May still be normal
→
Stage 3

Iron deficiency anemia

Without enough iron, the body makes less hemoglobin. Anemia means hemoglobin has fallen below the normal range.

Iron studies
Typically low
Hemoglobin
Below normal range
ⓘ
No single number tells the whole story. Ferritin can read higher during inflammation or infection, and reference ranges differ between labs. Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, history and other bloodwork.
Why people seek assessment

Low Iron → Possible Symptoms

Some people with iron deficiency notice changes like these. Others have no symptoms and learn about it from routine bloodwork.

Fatigue
Weakness
Dizziness
Headaches
Palpitations
Cold feeling
Shortness of breath
Hair loss
Reduced exercise tolerance
i
Many possible causes

These symptoms are common and can have many causes besides iron. Bloodwork and a clinical review are the best way to understand why.

iV iron visit at MedCAiRE
Your bloodwork

Have recent bloodwork? We can review it.

Iron status is assessed with a group of tests, not one result. Our clinical team reviews the relevant labs as part of your consultation.

What each test tells us

Ferritin
How much iron is stored
Hemoglobin / CBC
Whether anemia is present
Serum iron
Iron circulating in the blood
TIBC
The blood's capacity to carry iron
Transferrin saturation
How much of that capacity is in use

Your provider may also look at other results, such as B12 or folate, depending on your history.

Oral iron vs. iV iron

When iV iron may be considered

Iron pills work for some people. But if they cause nausea, constipation or stomach upset, or your levels don't improve, iV iron infusion delivers iron directly into the bloodstream.

iV iron may be considered if you
✓Can't tolerate oral iron because of nausea, constipation or stomach upset
✓Haven't had an adequate response to oral supplements
✓Have a condition that affects iron absorption
✓Have ongoing iron loss, such as heavy menstrual bleeding
✓Have been advised by a health-care provider to consider iV iron
i
Not the right fit for everyone

Low ferritin alone doesn't mean you need an infusion. If oral iron or another approach suits you better, we'll advise you.

!
Safety, in plain language

iV iron is generally well tolerated. Some people have mild, temporary effects such as flushing or a headache. Serious reactions are uncommon, but our Registered Nurses monitor you throughout the infusion.

iV iron options

Two iV iron formulations, chosen for You!

We offer Health Canada-approved iV iron formulations. Neither is better for everyone; our medical provider recommends one based on your bloodwork, history and, if relevant, stage of pregnancy.

iV iron infusion

Often One Visit

Ferric derisomaltose

A higher dose given in a single infusion, so many patients need fewer visits. Used for adults and teens who are not pregnant.

Pregnancy & postpartum
Several Small Doses

Iron sucrose

Smaller doses over several visits, from 14 weeks of pregnancy and postpartum, coordinated with your OB or midwife.

Visits
Several infusions, per prescription
Infusion time
45–75 minutes, monitored
Clinic fee
$290 per infusion, plus medication

Our medical team confirms which formulation, dose and number of visits best suit you. Iron sucrose may also be recommended for some adults who are not pregnant.

What happens next

Consultation to follow-up

1
Consultation & bloodwork

A 15-minute consult in person, by phone or virtually. We review your labs and history, or help arrange bloodwork.

2
Your treatment plan

If iV iron is appropriate, we recommend a formulation and coordinate your medication prescription with the pharmacy.

3
Infusion day

A private, comfortable room in Mississauga or Oakville. A Registered Nurse places your iV and monitors you throughout.

4
Follow-up

Repeat bloodwork, typically 6–8 weeks later, checks your iron levels. Your plan is adjusted to your results.

Functional medicine approach

We look for why your iron is low

Restoring iron is half the plan. Finding out why it dropped is the other half. Based on your bloodwork, we may add B12, folate or vitamin C support, nutrition guidance or a physician follow-up, to help your levels hold long-term.

Heavy menstrual bleeding
Pregnancy
Low dietary iron
Absorption issues, e.g. celiac or IBD

Questions

Iron infusion FAQs

Do I need a referral or a family doctor?

No. Self-referrals are welcome. If you don't have a family doctor or recent bloodwork, we can help you arrange it before your consultation.

Is low ferritin the same as anemia?

No. Ferritin reflects how much iron is stored. Anemia means hemoglobin is below the normal range. You can have low iron stores without being anemic, which is why we look at several results together.

How do I know if I may need an iron infusion?

That's decided at your consultation. We review your bloodwork, symptoms, history and any oral iron you've tried. iV iron is recommended only when it suits your situation.

What bloodwork do you need?

Usually ferritin, a complete blood count (CBC) including hemoglobin, and iron studies such as serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation. Your provider may request other tests depending on your history.

What's the difference between the two iV iron options?

Iron sucrose is given in smaller doses over several visits and is the option we use in pregnancy. Ferric derisomaltose is a higher-dose option that can often be given in a single visit. Your provider recommends the one that fits your needs.

How long does an infusion take, and how many will I need?

Ferric derisomaltose takes about 60–90 minutes and is usually a single infusion. Iron sucrose takes about 45–75 minutes and is given over several visits. You're monitored throughout, and your plan sets the exact number.

Can iV iron be used during pregnancy?

Yes, in the second and third trimesters, with iron sucrose. We typically see patients from 14 weeks onward and coordinate with your OB, midwife or primary provider. See our pregnancy & postpartum page for details.

What if I'm already taking iron pills?

If they're working for you, that's great. If they cause side effects or your levels aren't improving, we can assess whether iV iron is appropriate.

Is it covered by insurance?

The medication is billed by the pharmacy, which confirms your coverage with you; many drug plans cover it. Many extended health plans reimburse the clinic fee, and we provide detailed receipts.

Supporting normal immune function

Immune health depends on many parts of overall wellness working together. Nutrition, hydration, sleep, activity and stress all play a role, and certain vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc, contribute to normal immune function.

When it's clinically appropriate, iV or injectable nutrient therapy can be one part of an individualized wellness plan. It works alongside healthy daily habits; it doesn't replace them.

Questions

Immunity & wellness FAQs

How does nutrition support normal immune function?

Certain vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc, contribute to normal immune function. Most people get these from a varied diet. Sleep, activity, stress and overall health matter too.

What is iV nutrient therapy?

Vitamins, minerals and fluids are delivered into a vein through an iV drip by a registered nurse. Whether it suits you is decided at your consultation.

What is a Myers' Cocktail?

An iV formula first used in the 1970s that combines B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, calcium and zinc with fluids. We can adjust it to your needs when prescribed.

Do you offer vitamin C iV therapy?

Vitamin C is part of our Myers' Cocktail and our Immune Support iV, which also includes zinc and electrolytes.

Are B12 and vitamin D injections available?

Yes, at both clinics. Vitamin D injections need a recent blood test to set a safe dose.

How do I know which treatment may be right for me?

Book a wellness consultation. We review your goals, health history, medications and any recent bloodwork, then recommend an option, or tell you if you don't need one.

Can anyone receive iV therapy?

No. Some health conditions, medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding need a different approach. We check before recommending treatment.

How long does an iV take, and how often can I have one?

A Myers' Cocktail usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. Many people come in once or twice a month, or about four times a year for ongoing wellness. Your nurse confirms the right timing for you at your consultation.

Is there a fee for the consultation?

No. The wellness consultation is free. You'll know the fee for any recommended treatment before it begins.

Do I need a referral?

No. Self-referrals are welcome at both clinics.

Is it covered by insurance?

Wellness iVs and injections aren't covered by OHIP. Some extended health plans may reimburse part of the cost; we provide detailed receipts.

Integrative cancer support

A cancer diagnosis affects far more than one part of your health. Our role is to look at the broader picture (energy, nutrition, nutrient status and recovery) and support it safely, in step with the treatment your oncology team has planned.

What it is
  • A medical assessment of how you are feeling, your history and your bloodwork
  • Supportive therapies that may help with energy, nutrition and wellbeing
  • A plan shared and coordinated with your oncology team
  • Regular follow-up that adapts as your treatment changes
What it isn't
  • A treatment for cancer, or a replacement for chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other oncology care
  • A reason to delay or change your oncology treatment
  • Therapies started without checking how they fit with your treatment schedule

Questions

Cancer care FAQs

Will this replace my cancer treatment?

No. Our care is supportive and works alongside the treatment your oncology team provides. We never recommend delaying or changing oncology treatment.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can book a Health Assessment directly. If your oncologist or family doctor would like to refer you, we welcome that too.

Will you talk to my oncologist?

Yes. With your consent, we can communicate with your oncology team and share our assessment and plan, including the timing of any iV therapies.

Can I have iV therapy during chemotherapy or radiation?

It depends on your treatment. Some antioxidant therapies may need to be scheduled around chemotherapy or radiation, so timing is planned case by case with your oncology team.

Why do I need a G6PD test?

High-dose vitamin C is not safe for people with G6PD deficiency, so we test for it before your first high-dose vitamin C infusion. There is no fee for the test.

How much does it cost?

The initial Health Assessment is $190 and the results review and plan visit is $0. Treatment costs depend on your plan, and we review them with you before you start.
