About the service

Iron deficiency affects millions of people, leaving you fatigued, foggy, and running on empty. At MedCAiRE Health, we offer advanced intravenous iron therapy using Health Canada-approved Venofer® and Monoferric®, restoring your iron levels quickly and safely — especially when oral supplements haven't worked.

Appropriate for ages 14 to Adults.

Are you Pregnant or postpartum? We offer OB-approved iV iron care — see our dedicated Pregnancy iV Iron webpage.

Who Benefits from iV Iron Therapy?

iV iron may be considered when iron stores can't be adequately restored through diet or oral supplementation, including:

  • Iron deficiency, with or without anemia
  • Chronic fatigue, burnout, or brain fog
  • Dizziness, frequent headaches, or shortness of breath
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, Ongoing or unexplained blood loss
  • Poor tolerance or inadequate response to oral iron supplements
  • Cold hands, feet, pale skin, or brittle nails

Your Treatment Options:

✅Venofer® (Iron Sucrose)

  • Small gentle doses spaced over 2–3 visits
  • Ideal for those with complex health needs, lower-dose preferences and pregnancy

✅Monoferric® (Iron Derisomaltose)

A high-dose option that can fully restore iron levels in a single visit — fewer appointments, faster relief from fatigue and other symptoms.

  • Often just one infusion needed
  • Fewer visits than Venofer®
  • Ideal for moderate-to-severe deficiency or those who haven't responded well to oral iron

Your MedCAiRE provider will recommend the best option based on your current iron status, blood tests, medical history, and stage of pregnancy.

What to Expect — Step-by-Step

Before initiating treatment, we perform a detailed blood panel assessment of your iron status and help guide your personalized therapy plan. These blood labs help determine the optimal dose, formulation and frequency of iV iron while ensuring your treatment is safe and effective. Treatment is never based on a single lab value alone. We also monitor your levels post-treatment to confirm iron stores are replenished without risk of overload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral or family doctor to get iV iron therapy?

No referral is needed — self-referrals are welcome. If you don't have a family doctor, no problem: we can help guide you on arranging recent bloodwork so we can review your results and confirm treatment is right for you.

What's the difference between Venofer® and Monoferric®?

Venofer® is given in smaller, gentler doses over 2–3 visits — ideal for those who prefer a lower-dose approach. Monoferric® is a higher-dose option that can often restore iron levels in a single visit, meaning fewer appointments.

Are iV iron infusions safe? What are the side effects?

Yes, iV iron is generally well-tolerated. Some people experience mild, temporary side effects like flushing or a headache. Serious reactions are uncommon, and your registered nurse monitors you closely throughout your infusion for safety.

Can you communicate with my Doctor, OB or midwife?

Absolutely. We welcome collaborative care and can share your iron status and treatment notes with your health provider upon request.

What if I’m already taking iron pills?

If they’re working, great. If not—or if they cause side effects—we’ll help you transition safely to iV therapy if appropriate.

How will I know if the treatment is working?

Most people notice improved energy, focus, and overall wellbeing within a few weeks. We recommend repeat bloodwork 6–8 weeks after your infusion to confirm your iron stores have been restored.

How is the cost broken down, and is it covered by insurance?

Your total cost includes a consultation deposit, the medication itself (billed separately by our pharmacy partner), and the infusion fee. Many extended health plans cover some or all of these costs — we provide detailed receipts you can submit for reimbursement.
