About the service

Breastfeeding is one of the healthiest ways to feed your baby, but it doesn't always come naturally to new mothers. That's where lactation consultants come in. Here's how they can help.

What is a Lactation Consultation?

Lactation consultants or lactation specialists are nursing professionals who assist new moms with breastfeeding. They also provide prenatal education and preparation for expecting parents. It's important to find a certified International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for the best support.

What does a Lactation Consultant do?

A lactation consultant can help you overcome various challenges related to feeding your baby, including:

  1. Poor milk supply
  2. Trouble hitting weight milestones
  3. Struggles with finding the right  nursing position, especially after a C-section
  4. Baby falling asleep at the breast
  5. Baby refusing to breastfeed
  6. Marathon breastfeeding sessions that leave you feeling drained
  7. Emotional and physical barriers to breastfeeding, including postpartum depression
  8. Pain while breastfeeding

Additionally, a lactation specialist can assist with feeding premature babies or infants with physical or neurological disabilities. No matter the setback, your consultant will work with you to develop a personalized solution.

Working with a Lactation Consultant

Your relationship with your lactation consultant is intimate, as they will be involved in your breastfeeding journey. Here are some tips to make the most out of this relationship:

  1. Don't be modest: Lactation consultants are comfortable with the human body. Be open to having your breasts squeezed or manipulated to ensure the best feeding position. They may also apply salve to swollen, chapped nipples. Trust their expertise and don't feel embarrassed.
  2. Disclose everything: While not doctors, lactation consultants need to know about aspects of your life that could affect your milk supply or general health. This includes diet, exercise habits, sleep, conflicts with others, dark thoughts, and any supplements or medication you are taking.
